This is an open continuous announcement for six months ending
November 20, 2008. There are vacancies for immediate selection for
Vernal, UT and Richfield, UT. Qualified applicants who apply for
these locations by June 8, 2008, will be referred to the selecting
official. Additional selections will be made from this announcement
as other vacancies become available.
RECRUITMENT/RELOCATION INCENTIVE: The BLM may use certain
incentives, currently offered by the Federal government, to attract
high quality candidates. Exceptional recruiting difficulty may
result in payment of a recruitment or relocation bonus in accordance
with the Code of Federal Regulations.
Travel and relocation expenses will be paid consistent with the
Federal Travel Regulation and Departmental policy.
The full performance level of these positions is GS-11.
As a geologist, you will be responsible for helping us accomplish our
mission by serving as the principal advisor on phases of the minerals
program, including planning, programming, mineral leasing, salable
minerals, review of exploration and mining plan of operations and
mining claim determinations.
Vernal, Utah, is a growing, rural, western community. It is located
in Uintah County along US Highways 40 and 191, in the northeast
corner of Utah near the Colorado border with a population of
approximately 28,000. The elevation is 5,336. The area enjoys the
four climate seasons. Housing is available to rent or purchase.
There are adequate shopping and medical facilities (with one
hospital) and churches of several denominations. There are schools
through the high school level and extension courses available through
Utah State University. Vernal is near the rugged Uinta Mountains,
Utah’s tallest mountain range. Most of the range is a protected
wilderness area offering good back country hiking and camping. East
of the range are two noteworthy scenic national monuments, Flaming
Gorge and Dinosaur. Flaming Gorge offers good boating, fishing and
sightseeing on a large lake, beautifully contained within colorful
canyon high canyon scenery. There is also Steinaker Reservoir State
Park and Red Fleet Reservoir State Park located within 10 miles,
which offer water recreation. Golfing and horseback riding are also

Richfield, Utah, is located 160 miles south of Salt Lake City,
placing it near the center of the State. It is 45 miles from Fish
Lake and is surrounded by Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef National
Parks. The altitude is 5,280 feet and the climate is moderate.
Richfield is a mid-sized town (pop. 6,500). It is both a shopping
and cultural center for the central Utah area. For more information

Cedar City, Utah, is a city of approximately 20,000 population. The
elevation is 5,800 feet and the climate is desirable (four seasons).
Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. It is also home
to the renowned Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Utah Summer
Games. Cedar City is near Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Brian
Head Ski Resort, Cedar Breaks and Kolob Canyon. There is a wide
variety of cultural and recreational offerings. Housing is available
for rental or purchase at usual city prices. Cedar City has the
usual facilities found in a town of its size, including a hospital,

Price, Utah, is a mid-size town (pop. 9,000) located in the middle of
Utah. To the south and east lie the remote expanses of desert of the
Colorado Plateau. Nine Mile Canyon northeast of Price features some
of the best ancient rock art in the State. Further east, the Green
River carves canyons through the desert offering white water rafting
opportunities. South of Price lies the northern portion of the San
Rafael Swell with wonderful scenic drives and back country hiking
opportunities for the adventurous. To the west are the forested
highlands of the Wasatch Plateau offering pleasant scenic drives,
hiking and mountain biking opportunities in a cool alpine setting.

Salt Lake City, Utah, elevation 4,354 feet, has a population of
approximately 750,000 in the immediate area. Housing is readily
available for purchase or rent. Shopping, educational, religious and
medical facilities are excellent. Prices for food, clothing, etc.,
are comparable with other urban areas. The area’s productive
workforce, low unemployment, exceptional recreation and overall
quality of life are a few of the reasons the Salt Lake valley is
considered to be one of the nation’s economic hot spots. In
addition, hiking, cycling, mountain climbing, fishing, hunting,
camping, rafting, and numerous other outdoor activities are
conveniently available. There are seven national forests and five
national parks within the borders of the state. Seven national
monuments, two national recreation areas and one national historic
site add to the mix. It’s hard to imagine a land with more natural
treasures. Add to this the fact that the area boasts four
universities as well as other fine educational institutions and one
of the most educated workforces in the United States. It’s hard to
imagine an area with better quality of life than what is enjoyed in
